| Cheyenne is the capital of Wyoming and relatively nearby to Denver, CO as well. There are about 32.19 crimes per 1,000 resident each year. When measured in terms of crimes per square mile, Cheyenne has 88 crimes per square mile each year compared to a national average of 32 per year. Violent Crime Rate While the overall crime rate is high, the violent crime rate is thankfully significantly lower than average. There are 1.93 violent crimes per 1,000 residents each year compared to a national average of 3.8 violent crimes per 1,000 residents. This means that Cheyenne residents have just a 1 in 519 chance of becoming a victim of some type of violent crime in any given year. Unfortunately, the murder rate in the city is about twice the national average. Property Crime Rate There are 32.19 property crimes per 1,000 residents each year, which is quite a bit higher than the national average of 24.9 crimes per 1,000 residents. Thefts, in particular, are much higher than average, making up a whopping 78 percent of all crime in the city, followed by burglaries, which make up another 13 percent of crimes committed. People living in the city have a 1 in 31 chance of becoming a victim of some type of property crime in any given year. Burglaries went up by about 4.1 percent between 2015 and 2016. This makes having some type of security system even more important. More than 60 percent of burglars stated in one study that they avoid homes with alarm systems and instead opt for homes that are easier to break into without anyone noticing, such as those where the owners leave the doors or windows unlocked. The main point of entry is typically the front door, so installing a solid front door with a deep-set deadbolt lock can further limit the risk that your home will be burglarized, as it won’t be as easy to break into the home. Trimming bushes and trees near the doors and windows and installing lights on motion sensors can further reduce the risk. Safest Areas It’s better to live in some areas of the city than others if you want to limit your chances of becoming a victim of crime. The neighborhood of East 5th Street/North Greeley Highway is the most dangerous, while the neighborhoods of Missile Drive/Randall Avenue, Ranchettes and Horse Creek/Farthing tend to be the safest in the city. It’s possible to live in an area with an even lower crime rate if you move to one of the nearby cities, such as Ault, Windsor or Eaton. Just avoid Greeley, as it has an even higher crime rate than Cheyenne. Police Presence As of 2015, there weren’t as many police officers as recommended in Cheyenne. There were 106 officers, meaning that there was a ratio of 1.63 officers per 1,000 residents. This is lower than the national average of 2.2 officers per 1,000 residents and the Wyoming average of 2.5 officers per 1,000 residents. The department was trying to get permission to hire an additional 19 police officers by the end of 2017 to fix this problem. Each officer had to handle 689 calls in 2014, or about 30 percent more than officers in similar cities. The lack of staffing means that response times may be longer than desired. For example, a priority one burglar alarm, which is typically a verified burglary in progress, had an average response time of 6 minutes 47 seconds, while a burglary that had already happened had a response time of 39 minutes and 13 seconds. In order to get a 6 minute response time instead of a 39 minute response time, it’s a good idea to install a video verified alarm system, since this type of system uses videos taken when the alarm went off to show the reason for the alarm. The alarm company will then only report burglaries in progress and not false alarms to the police. A faster response time is particularly important given the fact that the police only solve about 7 percent of burglaries compared to a national average clearance rate of 12 percent.
